Arm Liposuction (Upper Arm Fat Reduction)
What is arm liposuction?
Arm liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to reduce localised fat in the upper arms, including the front and back of the armpit region. The aim is to create a slimmer, more defined arm contour. It is not a weight loss procedure.
Why do people consider arm liposuction?
People may seek this procedure if they:
- Have localised upper arm fat that has not improved with diet or exercise
- Prefer a more defined or toned arm appearance
- Feel self conscious wearing sleeveless clothing
- Have a genetic tendency to store fat on the back of the upper arms
Who may be suitable for this procedure?
A person may be considered for arm liposuction if they:
- Are aged 18–60 and in generally good health
- Do not have uncontrolled medical conditions such as significant heart disease, clotting disorders, or poorly controlled diabetes
- Have localised fat deposits rather than generalised obesity
- Have skin with reasonable elasticity to allow retraction after fat removal
- Maintain a stable weight and are not planning major weight changes
- Do not smoke, or are willing to stop before and after surgery (smoking increases complication risk)
- Have realistic expectations about achievable results, understanding that contour improvement is expected but complete removal of skin laxity is not
How is the procedure performed?
The procedure may be performed under local anaesthesia with oral sedation or general anaesthesia, depending on the extent of treatment.
General steps may include:
- Marking the treatment areas while standing to identify fat pockets and contour lines
- Creating small incisions near the elbow and shoulder
- Injecting a tumescent solution (local anaesthetic, saline and medication to minimise bleeding)
- Using ultrasound energy (VASER) to break down targeted fat while aiming to preserve nearby tissue
- Removing the emulsified fat through small cannulas
- Closing or dressing the incisions and applying a compression garment, typically worn for 3–6 weeks
When will I see results?
Some change is visible immediately after surgery. However, swelling is normal, and the most noticeable improvement generally appears around 8–12 weeks. Final results may take up to 6 months. Outcomes vary between individuals.
What should I expect during recovery?
- A compression garment is typically worn for 3–6 weeks
- Bruising, swelling, discomfort, and temporary numbness are common
- Pain relief medication and antibiotics may be prescribed
- Many people return to light duties within 2–3 days
- Strenuous activity should generally be avoided for 3–6 weeks, as advised by your doctor
What are the risks?
Arm liposuction is a significant surgical procedure and carries risks. These include:
Common risks and side effects:
- Bruising and swelling
- Pain or discomfort
- Temporary numbness, firmness, tightness, or lumpiness
- Small scars or risk of keloid formation
- Infection
- Bleeding or haematoma
Less common or rare risks:
- Contour irregularities, asymmetry, or uneven results
- Skin or tissue distortion
- Nerve or muscle injury
- Anaesthetic risks, including allergic reactions, breathing difficulties, or (rarely) cardiac arrest
Your doctor will discuss the expected benefits, alternatives, limitations, and risks during a formal consultation to ensure informed consent.
