What is Anti-Wrinkle Treatment?

Anti-Wrinkle Treatment refers to the procedure in which a purified toxin produced by a form of bacterium known as Clostridium botulinum is injected to get rid of wrinkles. Scientists have developed a method of diluting the toxin so that it loses its toxic properties while retaining its ability to cause muscle relaxation and smoothening of wrinkles.

How does Anti-Wrinkle Treatment work?

When an anti-wrinkle medication is injected into a muscle it acts by blocking signals from the nerves causing muscle contractions. The muscle no longer contracts forcefully and hence the wrinkle lines are softened.

How is the Anti-Wrinkle injection performed?

Specific muscles are selected for the procedure to provide maximum cosmetic benefit. The muscles are injected with a fine needle. There is no need for anaesthesia as only minimal discomfort is produced.

How long before the full effect is noticed?

It generally takes 3-7 days, but in some cases 2 weeks.

How long does it last?

The anti-wrinkle effect lasts around 4-6 months. With repeated injections, the wrinkle lines appear less severe as the muscles are trained to relax.

What are the side effects of Anti-Wrinkle treatment?

Transient bruising and slight pain. Headache is a rare occurrence that lasts a day or two.

Are there any contraindications?

Breastfeeding, pregnancy, neurological disease, allergy to the anti-wrinkle medication.

Some conditions that can be treated using Anti-Wrinkle Treatment:

Forehead Lines

What are forehead lines?

Wrinkle lines which form on the forehead.

What are the types of forehead wrinkles?

Vertical “11” lines between the brows and horizontal lines across the forehead.

How are they formed?

They are formed due to active involvement of the forehead muscles in facial expression, frequent exposure to sunlight, and loss of skin elasticity with age.

How are forehead lines treated with anti-wrinkle medication?

Active wrinkles which are visible only with muscle contraction are best treated with anti-wrinkle injections. Small doses injected in multiple areas of the forehead will significantly reduce active forehead lines.

Frown Lines

What are frown lines?

Frown lines appear due to gathering of tissue into a fold between the eyebrows.

How are they formed?

Repeated facial expressions such as frowning tend to deepen these lines producing an angry or sad look.

How are frown lines treated with anti-wrinkle medication?

Careful injections of the anti-wrinkle medication into the area where the skin tends to wrinkle during repeated facial expressions causes the selected muscles to relax and softens the wrinkles in these areas.

Crow’s feet lines

What are crow’s feet lines?

They are wrinkles that are formed around the corner of the eyes in a pattern that resembles crow’s feet.

How are crow’s feet formed?

They are formed due to loss of skin elasticity with age, weakening of facial muscles, and repeated laughing or squinting.

How is crow’s feet treated with anti-wrinkle medication?

Careful injections of the anti-wrinkle medication into the region around the corners of the eyes prevents the muscles in this area from contracting vigorously during squinting or laughing. This eliminates the crow’s feet effect during facial expression.

Eye brow lift

How is anti-wrinkle treatment used to lift the eye brow?

The anti-wrinkle medication can be used to raise the eye brow by carefully injecting the muscles that depress the brow so that they relax and the brow rests in a lifted position.

Why is it done?

It is performed to lift sagging eye brows and to reduce the vertical creases between the eyes and the horizontal lines across the forehead.

What are the risks associated with the procedure?

The procedure is very safe although there are minimal risks which include brow asymmetry and skin sensation changes.

Bunny lines/Nose lines

What are bunny lines/nose lines?

They are diagonal wrinkles that appear along the side of the nose every time you crinkle up your nose during certain facial expressions such as laughing.

How are they treated with anti-wrinkle medication?

They can be treated with anti-wrinkle injections to prevent the contraction of the facial muscles that cause the crinkling of the nose.

Gummy smile

What is a gummy smile?

It is a condition where a significant portion of the gums become visible while smiling.

How is gummy smile treated with anti-wrinkle medication?

Injections of anti-wrinkle medication to the upper lip will cause the muscles that lift the lip upwards to relax and reduce the visibility of the gums.

Wide Jaw Reduction

What is a wide jaw?

A wide jaw is one that appears large and out of proportion with the rest of the face.

How does anti-wrinkle treatment help with jaw width reduction?

Increased width of the jaw may be caused by overdeveloped facial muscles responsible for chewing. Injecting the anti-wrinkle medication into these muscles results in marked reduction in the jaw width and slimming of the face.

Dimpled Chin Correction

What is a dimpled chin?

A dimpled chin is caused by hyperactive muscles of the chin which contract vigorously during certain facial expressions causing wrinkles in the chin.

How is anti-wrinkle treatment used for correction of a dimpled chin?

A dimpled chin may be corrected by injecting the anti-wrinkle medication to relax the chin muscles as well as controlling the involuntary habit of puckering the chin.

Reduction of Aging Neck Folds

What causes aging neck folds?

With age, the skin loses elasticity and the muscles of the neck which animate facial expression may cause folding of the skin due to repeated contraction.

How does anti-wrinkle treatment help in reduction of neck folds?

The anti-wrinkle medication can be injected into the platysma muscles of the neck which are actively used during facial expression. They help to soften the prominence of the platysma bands that cause vertical wrinkle lines in the neck.
